Breathing Space September 2024

Pumpkin spice, back to school…Make a self-care refresh part of your fall!

I have been feeling pretty busy lately, and I am sure some of you feel the same. What happens to many people when in that space (me included) is that the first thing that is taken off our plates is our self-care. Of course that makes no sense, but alas, we are humans!

If you are finding that scenario playing out in your life, I want to share two quick—and surprisingly powerful—little practices to try.

10-Minute resilience reset

  1. Pause what you’re doing. Take a breath.
  2. Check in with yourself and ask What is something I can do right now, for 10 minutes, that will help me feel nourished and refreshed?
  3. Once you have the answer, do that thing. This is your 10-minute resilience reset, a chance to refuel and rest.

You can find 10 minutes for yourself on even the busiest of days. I know you can. And every time you practice, you’ll be investing in something meaningful—cultivating a kinder relationship with yourself.

End your workday with a simple gratitude pause

The easiest way to do this is to think of something you appreciate about your workday and write it down. Many studies have shown that when people do this regularly, they report feeling more optimistic and better about their lives overall.

Another way, since you’re likely busy, is to build in a simple gratitude ritual at the end of your day that will be hard to skip. A good way to do this is to connect it to something you already do. For example, my ritual is thinking of something good that happened during the day right after I create my to-do list for the next day.

If you share something positive about your day with someone else, even better. Research shows that discussing positive experiences with others enhances how good you feel about them and increases their after-effect.

I would love to hear about your experience with either (or both?) of these simple practices. Drop me a line!
