Educational Rights for Students in Foster Care

Educational Rights for Students in Foster Care
Children and youth who experience foster care in Colorado not only endure changes at home but also face educational instability due to school changes, gaps in enrollment, and delayed transfer of records. Education plays a critical role in positive psychosocial development, so educational instability has lasting implications, even after a child or youth leaves care. This web-based training provides Colorado Child Welfare Education Liaisons (CWELs) and child welfare staff with guidance on their roles and responsibilities to improve educational stability for young people experiencing foster care. In addition to explaining rights, roles, and responsibilities, this training explores the educational resources available in your community and how you can collaborate with other agencies to provide children and youth in care a stable educational experience.

After initial completion, this course is required every two years for CWELs and to maintain certification as a caseworker or supervisor in Colorado.
