Quick Tips for Caregivers June 2025

I hope you dance, sing, hum, drum, tap, or strum this summer!

This time of year can feel like so many things are ending: school is out, students have graduated from various levels of education, and even spring is fading. But summer is right around the corner, along with many hours of free time and new experiences for children and youth.

Typical summer events for youth might include day camp or sleepaway camp, leadership and life-enhancing programs (like Girls Inc. and Boys and Girls Clubs of America), hanging out at rec centers, summer school or other educational opportunities, a first summer job, enjoying library programming…and so many more.

When I think of summer, I think of music. Singing in the car with the windows rolled down, outdoor concerts, dancing at family weddings. Why not intentionally incorporate the fun and connectedness of music into your child’s summer activities?

Nurture a budding lyricist

Encourage your youth to write down their feelings in the form of a song or change the lyrics of one of their favorite songs to fit their personal experiences.

Dance it out

  • Enroll your youth in a class—Denver Public Library’s Summer of Adventure program and other county libraries offer dance-related activities
  • Move together—organizations like Denver Ecstatic Dance offer free or reduced-cost dance sessions
  • Challenge your child to choreograph a short dance segment

Each child has their own cadence for summer activities: some like sports, some like additional schooling, some like dance, some like music. No matter what your child likes, make sure they get out and experience their community this summer and dance (or sing or play).
